“Bharat ki Den” (July 11, 2021)

The Consulate in partnership with Hindi Literary Society of BC Canada celebrated “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” with the theme on “Bharat ki Den” on 11.07.2021. Mr. Acharya Shrinath Dwivedi, Founder of the Society, Ms. Neema Manral, Secretary, and Sarika Sharma, Treasurer of the Society hosted the event. Ms. Sunita Mishra from India spoke about Yoga, Ms Geeta Sethi spoke about Ayurveda, Ms. Prachi recited a poem ‘Bharat ki beti’ and Ms. Renu Pant presented the history of Indian spices accentuating the fact that 70% of the spices of world comes from India. A Bharatanatyam dance was performed by Ms. Vijaylakshmi and Kathak by Ms. Anjali. Mr. Sidharath Choudhary spoke about world famous Indian Food. Ms. Jyotika Jasuja presented a song “Jahan daal daal pr sone ki chidiya” and Deepika sang “Sare Jahan se Acha”. Sucha Singh Mann spoke about Indian Sports, like wrestling, which originated in India and Akhara and the famous Folk singer Ustad Imamddin presented Rajasthani Lok geet and spoke about Indian Music. Ms. Tarana Kaur, artist, actress spoke about Indian Cinema. Youth Ambassador of Hindi Literary Society Pooja Mishra, Geeta Mishra, Sangavi and Samarya Gupta performed a small play on pharmaceutical and technology industry. Isha Sharma, Anushri Sharma and Simran Oberoi illustrated the dance transformation in Indian Cinema from traditional to modern dance. The program aimed to enlighten people about the rich and valuable gifts of India in the various field such as culture, literature, social awareness, science, cooking, medicine etc. Mr. G. Ajith Kumar, Consul, thanked the Society and its members for organising the event as part of India@75 – “Azadi ki Amrit Mahotsav”, and their collaboration in events organized by the Consulate in the past.

Virtual Meeting with Hon’ble Minister Mr. George Chow (July 14, 2021)

Manish, Consul General, had a virtual meeting on 14/07/2021 with Mr. George Chow, Hon’ble Minister of State for Trade, British Columbia. Both sides discussed and reviewed the current bilateral trade and economic engagements between India and BC. Mr. George Chow said that India is the 5th largest trading partner of BC and would like to further enhance these relations further in promoting sectors like solar energy, hydrogen storage capacity, clean technology, low carbon emission technology, mines and minerals, metallurgy, coal, copper and lumber products. Minister apprised the Consul General that they have opened five trade office in India and there is great potential for cooperation between BC and India. Consul General briefed Minister on the current state of Indian economy, policies of Govt of India to make it self reliant, FDI policies etc. CG mentioned that India is a leading country in solar energy sector and there is great scope of cooperation in solar energy. Education, Tourism and IT&ITES were also identified as potential areas of further cooperation.

Virtual Meeting with Hon’ble Minister Mr. Doug Schweitzer (July 15, 2021)

Manish, Consul General had a virtual meeting on 15/07/2021 with Hon’ble Mr. Doug Schweitzer, Minister of Jobs, Economy and Innovation, Alberta. Both sides reviewed the state of bilateral relations between Alberta & India and exchanged ideas to further improve trade & economic relations, including working together in priority sectors like agriculture, energy, education etc.

Virtual Meeting with Hon’ble Minister Ms. Anne Kang (July 15, 2021)

Manish, Consul General had a virtual meeting on 15/07/2021 with Hon’ble Ms. Anne Kang, Minister of Advanced Education & Skills Training, British Columbia. Both sides discussed ideas for collaboration in higher education and skill training. They in particular exchanged ideas of institutional linkages for skill training particularly in health care sectors and other sectors of interest. British Columbia is the huge recipient of workforce and student’s community from India.

India exports 4.75 mn tonnes of sugar so far this year: Trade body

Sugar mills have exported 4.75 million tonne of the sweetener so far in the ongoing 2020-21 marketing year ending September, with maximum shipments to Indonesia, trade body AISTA said on Friday.Mills have contracted to export 5.9 million tonne of sugar so far as against the 6 million tonne quota assigned by the food ministry in January this year, All India Sugar Trade Association (AISTA) said in a statement.

India expands mango export footprint to newer destinations

India has expanded its footprint of mango exports to the newer countries this season, notwithstanding logistical challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. In a major initiative which would boost mango export potential from the eastern region, especially to Middle East countries, a consignment of Fazil mango variety sourced from Malda district of West Bengal was exported on Saturday to Bahrain.

A Canada-based entrepreneur donated 25 tablet computers, worth Rs 2 lakh, to underprivileged children in a remote village in Tiruvallur district on Saturday. He donated the gadgets after seeing a story Express published, highlighting how the village’s first woman graduate was taking free tuition classes for underprivileged children in Thirukandalam village.
