REGISTRATION OF DEATH AND TRANSPORTATION OF BODY / ASHES

A. REGISTRATION OF DEATH (For Indian nationals only)

Death of an Indian national should be registered with the consulate by the next of kin/ relative (s)/ family member/friend (s) of the deceased by submitting the death certificate and last held Indian passport of the deceased. Form for death registration is available at the link ‘Forms for Consular Services’ and also available at Consular counter. Next of Kin/Relative (s)/ Family Member / friend (s) or Funeral Director/ Undertaker (if authorized by next of kin/ relative (s)/ family member/friend (s)) may complete the formalities.

Documents required for Registration of Death of Indian Nationals under jurisdiction of the Consulate.

  • Death Registration of Indian national Form. http://www.cgivancouver.gov.in/pages.php?id=185
  • Death Certificate in original from Canadian Authorities and a copy thereof
  • Original Indian Passport and copy of first and last pages.
  • Cremation certificate from Funeral Home and copy thereof.
  • Name, address and ID copy of the person applying for Death Registration. (Landline telephone bill/electricity bill/gas bill/water bill or Driving License or lease deed (of residence) etc. where the applicant’s / informant’s Canadian address is clearly mentioned, should be provided)
  • Person applying for service at the consulate needs to fill the Miscellaneous Application form and paste his/her picture at the appropriate place http://www.cgivancouver.gov.in/pages.php?id=185
  • No fee for this service for Indian passport holders

B. TRANSPORTATION OF ASHES

If the next of kin/ relative (s)/ family member/ friend (s) of the deceased wish to transport the ashes, the consulate issues a No Objection Certificate (NOC) in this regard ONLY TO INDIAN NATIONALS for transportation of ashes. Before issuance of this NOC, next of kin/ relative (s)/ family member (s) of the deceased have to complete certain formalities with local government authorities. Most of these documents are requirement which is normally asked by Customs authorities and Airlines. The next of kin/ relative (s)/ family member/friend (s) of the deceased may appoint a Funeral Director/ Undertaker to complete other required formalities for transportation of the ashes.

Documents required for Transportation of Ashes to India.

  • Death Certificate in original from Canadian Authorities and a copy thereof (Authenticated by the authority in the province concerned, in case the deceased was not an Indian citizen)
  • Original Passport of the deceased and copy of first and last pages
  • Cremation certificate from Funeral Home and a copy thereof
  • Affidavit form Funeral Home stating that the container contains only ashes of the deceased and nothing else and copy thereof.
  • Name, address and ID copy of the person applying for Death Registration. (Landline telephone bill/electricity bill/gas bill/water bill or Driving License or lease deed (of residence) etc. where the applicant’s / informant’s Canadian address is clearly mentioned, should be provided)

  • Processing fee : NO FEE FOR INDIAN PASSPORT HOLDERS For non-Indian passport holders, $35 in the form of Bank draft / money order / certified cheque, in favour of “Consulate General Of India, Vancouver”

C. TRANSPORTATION OF THE DEAD BODY

If the next of kin/ relative (s)/ family member/friend (s) of the deceased wish to transport the dead body to India for funeral purposes OR carry the ashes, the consulate issues a No Objection Certificate (NOC) in this regard for transportation of dead body to India OR ashes.  Before issuance of this NOC, next of kin/ relative (s)/ family member (s) of the deceased have to complete certain formalities with local government authorities. Most of these documents are requirement which is normally asked by Customs authorities and Airlines. The next of kin/ relative (s)/ family member/friend (s) of the deceased may appoint a Funeral Director/ Undertaker to complete other required formalities for transportation of the dead body. 

Documents Required for Transportation of human remains to India

  • Death registration of Indian national Form http://www.cgivancouver.gov.in/pages.php?id=185 (for Indian nationals only).
  • Death Certificate in original from Canadian Authorities and a copy thereof (Authenticated by the authority in the province concerned, in case the deceased was not an Indian citizen)
  • Embalmer Certificate from funeral home and a copy thereof
  • No Communicable Disease Certificate from Hospital and a copy thereof
  • Burial Permit from the concerned provincial authority and a copy thereof.
  • Coroner’s Certificate For Shipment of body out of province and a copy thereof.
  • Coroner’s Medical Certificate of Death and a copy thereof
  • Original Passport of the deceased.
  • Tentative Flight information.
  • Information of the consignor from Canada and consignee in India.

D. PROCESSING TIME FOR SECTIONS A, B & C:

If all the documents are in order, the service is granted normally the same day or next working day.

E. Important information about applicant/ informant / person taking body to India

  • If a person accompanies the body to India, photocopies of the passport page (s) containing personal particulars of the person who accompanies the body to its final destination in India with a written request from him/ her undertaking full responsibility for transportation of the body.
  • If the person who accompanies the body to India or collects the body in India is not a relative of the deceased, the next of kin/ a relative/ a family member of the deceased must convey his/ her consent to the Consular Section of the Consulate for transportation of the body to India through the authorized person.
  • If the body is transported without any escort, an Affidavit  from  next of kin/ relative (s)/ family member (s) taking full responsibility for collecting the body at the airport in India along with photocopy of passport or any other photo identity document in respect of the next of kin/ relative (s)/ family member (s), needs to be furnished.
