• A foreign national, who
  • was eligible to become a citizen of India on 26.01.1950,or
  • was a citizen of India on or at any time after 26.01.1950,or
  • belonged to a territory that became part of India after 15.08.1947

and his / her children and grandchildren, are eligible for registration as Overseas Citizens of India (OCI). The minor children of such persons are also eligible for OCI.

  • Minor children holding foreign nationality and whose both parents are citizens of India or one of the parent is a citizen of India or both or one parents are OCI card holder, are eligible for OCI Card
  • Foreign spouses of OCI card holders, whose marriage has been registered and subsisted for a continuous period of not less than two years immediately preceding the presentation of the application can apply for OCI. However, such applications would require prior approval from the Ministry. Such applicants would have to provide a notarized affidavit (format of which is given below) along with the application and other supporting documents.


  • Foreign spouse application : OCI, under Foreign spouse, is not for persons of Indian origin. Persons of Indian origin must apply in their own capacity of Indian origin. Applicant should be careful while selecting their option in their OCI application. Persons of Indian origin applicant should ensure before applying that their application is not a Foreign spouse category application."



OCI Card is a multiple entry life-long visa which enables the holder to have unlimited travel and stay in India. Basic information about OCI is as under

  • It is mandatory to surrender the Indian Passport on acquisition of foreign nationality
  • Normally, OCI cards should be ready in about 8-10 weeks after submitting hard copy of OCI application at the BLS Centre. However, depending on the applications received in the Consulate, it may take more time. Applicants may please keep this in mind while applying for the OCI card and deciding their travel plans. The Indian Consulate does not take any responsibility for reimbursement of any expenditure so incurred by the applicants. In case, any applicant needs to visit India while his OCI application is under process, he/she can apply for appropriate Indian visa on Canadian passport on payment of usual fee applicable.
  • Transfer/re-issue of OCI Card and U-visa can be requested under OCI Miscellaneous Services. The applicant is required to submit all the documents mentioned in the list of documents required along with the OCI MISC application
  • In case OCI card or Canadian passport having OCI visa or both are lost/damaged one can apply for re-issue of OCI Card and U-visa on his new Canadian passport by applying for OCI Misc. Services with a police report for the loss and with all the required documents.

  • All the questions in the form must be fully answered. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.Applicant shall be responsible for any correction/omission in the application form.
  • At the time of filling of application, please fill Vancouver Mission.
  • Name in the OCI application be indicated as per the name mentioned in the foreign passport.However, if name in the foreign passport differs from the name in the last held Indian passport, e.g. surname is added; or the spellings are changed, etc. ; the applicant shall have to submit an affidavit, duly notarized, stating that both the names are of the same person and that the applicant shall be self-responsible for any complication in future.
  • Upload the Full signature in the box provided in case of major. Thumb impression (left hand thumb for male & right hand thumb for female) or signature should be uploaded in case of minor.
  • Date of birth, place of birth and parents name in the OCI card shall be given as per last held Indian Passport, unless changes asked for in the particulars are as per rules and guidelines laid by the Government of India from time to time.
  • In addition to the prescribed fee, an applicant would be required to pay C$ 2.00 on account of Consular Surcharge + BLS service fee of C$ 7.40 (inclusive of applicable taxes.) Please consult them about the total charges and the exact procedure for remitting the fee.   • Non-Canadian passport holder should give residential address of the country in which he/she resided before, on a separate sheet of paper. Such cases require more processing time.
  • After grant of registration, a registration certificate in the prescribed format will be issued and a multiple entry, multi-purpose lifelong OCI 'U' visa sticker will be pasted on the foreign passport of the applicant.
  • OCI card holders traveling to India must carry the Passport containing Life Long Visa sticker and the OCI Card. When the OCI card holder obtains a new passport, he/she MUST carry the passport containing U Visa sticker, new passport and the OCI card {total three documents} for visiting India, else, he/she can apply for a new Life Long Visa sticker for the new passport under the OCI Misc. Service.
  • If the documents, submitted along with the application, are not sufficient/ satisfactory, applicant will be asked by the Consulate to provide more documentary evidence.
  • It is an offence to knowingly furnish false information or to suppress material information when applying for OCI.
  • Online Registration:The OCI Application is in two parts; Part A and Part B and MUST be submitted on-line by visiting the link - https://passport.gov.in/oci/
  • Alternatively, the Form can also be submitted online on the Ministry of Home Affairs website www.mha.nic.in at "Online Registration" on the "OCI Scheme" page. https://passport.gov.in/oci/welcome
  • When filling Part A, you can choose the application type either as an individual applicant or family group. You will be asked to complete the rest of the details accordingly. A family of 4 (spouses and two minor children) can complete part A together. Please ensure that Part A of each applicant is put together followed by one common Part B containing relevant information of all the applicants. The supporting documents should also be arranged in the same order as Part A of each applicant. All family members applying together must reside at the same address. If a family consists of more than 2 minor children, the application for the third (and all subsequent) minor children must be completed as an individual by selecting the option for an individual applicant. The Family Group option can also be opted if only one of the parents is applying along with one or two minor children. In case your children are not minor, an independent application for each such child needs to be completed.
  • Make sure to select the relevant Consulate under whose jurisdiction your residence falls. The provinces of Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon Territory, North West Territories fall under Consulate General of India Vancouver jurisdiction.
  • Before clicking on the "Submit" button, verify that the information you entered in Part A is correct and complete.
  • Click 'Submit" button to move to Part B of form. Fill in Part B online and press 'submit' button. It will generate a 'Reference No.' on the top right corner of application form. Once Part A and Part B is filled out, click 'Save'. A print window would appear. Click OK to print out the requisite application form consisting of Part A & Part B. Make sure that all lines, boxes and information on the form are present and legible.
  • In case you made an error and already clicked the 'Submit' button, restart the process and enter the reference number and date of birth to open the same application form to make corrections. A barcode and a reference number will be assigned to you by the computer upon completing the online registration. Retain this reference number as it will be required at the time of submission of the application at the BLS Center.
  • One recent photograph of size 51mm X 51mm of the applicant should be uploaded on Part A of the application form. The photograph should be of good quality taken against a light colored (NOT WHITE) background showing a shot up to the shoulders with full frontal view of face. Photograph should be of high resolution. Photographs that do not conform to these standards will be rejected.
  • The OCI application has multiple places for signature. The applicant should upload signature or a thumb impression (left thumb for male and right thumb for female) if he/she cannot sign, inside the box under the photograph on Part A of the form. Do not place both signature and thumb impression in the same box. It should contain either the signature or thumb impression of the applicant. Use either blue or black ink. It is very important that ALL APPLICANTS SIGN Part B.
  • When applying for a minor, both parents should sign at the bottom of the application but not at the site indicated for specimen signature of the applicant. Signatures of both parents are required even if both parents are not applying for OCI. If only one parent is available to sign for the minor, proof of custody or a death certificate of the other parent must be provided.
  • Question #20 of Part A: Please make sure to give the name and address of the employer. In case the applicant is retired, he/she should give the name and address of the last employer.
  • In case the space provided is not sufficient, additional sheets may be used for providing requisite details.
  • While submitting the application, any pages containing instructions after Part B should not be included.
  • The Consulate does not accept OCI applications directly. The OCI applications, complete in all respects, may be submitted, in person, at Indian Visa & Consular Service Centers managed by BLS International Services (Canada) Inc.
